Sentries
Took a little cruise on the motorcycle this evening with a friend of mine. She directed me to a fascinating water tower in the heart of south Minneapolis. I've lived in the city for most of my life and don't ever remember seeing this before.
Using "the Googles" I have discovered that this is called Washburn Park Water Tower. It was built from 1931 to 1932 during the Great Depression. The architect also designed the chapel at Lakewood Cemetery, among other places. It is no longer used for water storage, but it's on the national register for historic places, so hopefully it will continue to fascinate people for years to come. Click on the link above for more details about the site.
I'm really enjoying the new places I've been discovering lately, without ever having to leave the metro area.
More to come from here.

Ugh! I need to get out and take more pics. Sitting here this evening, desperate for a blog pic, I grabbed one of my dad's racing trophies and took a few shots with my phone. VoliĆ !

Twinkie
I was navigating the bowels of the building at work today and came across this guy. I don't know how much baseball he gets to play down there, but the 12-year-old in me was mildly amused that it says "Twins" right where his..ahem..package would be located.

Iggy
Digging through the archives today. The Science Museum of MN's Iggy the Iguana. As seen in 2010.
According to the museum's Facebook page, Iggy is 40 feet long and made out of 12,500 railroad spikes! Iggy took three years to create, 1974-1977.

Confidently
Because you have to be confident to relax naked in the rotunda of Minneapolis City Hall.
The 7 ton "Father of Waters" statue was carved out of a single 44 ton block of Italian marble. New Orleans commissioned it, but when they came up short on funds, 12 Minneapolis citizens and a local newspaper came up with the dough (estimated at the bargain basement price of $40k) and donated the statue to the city in 1904.
For more information, you can check out their brochure.
As seen during Doors Open Minneapolis.

Disconcertingly
Last Sunday we went for a drive in the Lake Minnetonka area and came across some farm animal statues at a gas station. This pig's eyes seriously creep me out.

Flighty
From a trip in 2005. I thought maybe it would be fun to shoot this again, but a little sleuthing found that this business closed in 2016.
However, I did find that the property is still for sale. I wonder if they would sell me just the pig. Hmmmm

Mather Park Gate
According to the attached writings, the land within this gateway was given to the people of Canada in 1928 by American citizen, Alonzo C. Mather. The gateway was built in 1939 and dedicated in August 1940 to the perpetual friendship of the nations on either side of the Niagara River.
