Shabby Chic 1877

More from our brief visit to the historic district of Northfield on Sunday.

Detail work above the windows of the Archer House – white-washed and peeling.  The Archer House was built in 1877.

Meet You on the Stairs

More from our brief visit to the historic district of Northfield on Sunday.

Ok, you got me.  This is the same image as yesterday.  Except that it is finished differently.  Color and editing give it a whole new feel and mood.  I like them both.

This is also why I always shoot in color – gives me plenty of options.

Nutting Block

More from our brief visit to the historic district of Northfield yesterday.

I just love the intricate details on old buildings and Nutting Block doesn't disappoint.  Above is the top half of the building, which doesn't show street level.

I'm also interested in the history of antique building materials.  Just below the top view is a bunch of glass tiles.  I saw that there was something written on some of the tiles, so I took the documentary photo below in order to look it up later.  I was shooting into the sun, so these tiles looked quite dark since the face of the building was in shade.  It wasn't until after I looked at the image that I saw some of the tiles have a pretty design on them.

These Luxfer Prism glass tiles were designed and patented by Frank Lloyd Wright!  They must have been added afterward because Nutting Block was built in 1893 and the patent on this particular tile design is 1897.  The tiles were designed to let in more light, since most buildings didn't have electric lighting yet.

Archer House

Today was a nice day for a drive.  We found ourselves in Northfield and took a little walk down their historic main street.

Archer House hotel opened its doors in 1877 – that's only 19 years after Minnesota became a state!

Separate But United

Part of the Flight 93 Memorial in PA.

The park worker told us that the wall was designed the way it was – with unique marble slabs instead of a solid wall – to show that each person was an individual but that they were all working together that day.

The Woods are Lovely

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
