Final Resting Place

Part of the Flight 93 Memorial in Pennsylvania.

This is the end of the path, past a wooden gate that only family and authorized personnel can pass through.  Out at the tree line is a large boulder that marks the spot where Flight 93 impacted.

A Journey Along the Final Millisecond

Part of the Flight 93 Memorial in Pennsylvania.

This "path" is part of the route of the final millisecond of Flight 93 just before it pile-drived upside-down into a field.

I walked every part of the path that the public is allowed to walk out of respect to the crew and passengers.

According to the National Park Service,
"Flight 93 struck the ground at a 40 degree angle almost upside down, hitting right wing and nose first, at a speed of between 563-580 miles per hour."

And That Ceiling

Continuing from yesterday, the staff person who was showing us around gave us some history on the ceiling in the main dining room.

The people who renovated the railroad station into a restaurant had no idea there were real Tiffany stained-glass windows in the ceiling.  The square glass windows were blacked out during WWII.

Spurred on by this tidbit, I Googled to find out more.  According to a Pittsburgh City Paper article from 2004, not only were they blacked out with paint, but they were covered in decades of coal dust and tar.  Nothing they did would clean them until a woman suggested oven cleaner.  It took 400 cans to get the glass clean!

Grand Concourse Illumination

The most beautiful architecture on our trip was dinner at the Grand Concourse in Pittsburgh.  I could have spent HOURS taking images in this magnificent 1901 restoration.

It was late when we finished supper and the place was mostly empty.  One of the waiters showed us around and gave us some history on the converted railroad station.

There will be more images of the Grand Concourse to come.

Spring in Full Bloom in PA

On our recent trip out east and back, the warmest pocket was in western PA outside of Pittsburgh.  Everywhere else was 40s and 50s, but where we stayed with friends was upper 60s and 70s.  And the warmer temps showed in the amount of beautiful spring plants in peoples' yards, like this beautiful bush.

Pittsburgh's Clinton Furnace

It's hard to tell in the image, but this thing is massive!

According to the sign, "Pittsburgh's first successful blast furnace for making pig iron.  Operations began near here, 1859, using Connellsville coke as fuel.  The furnace's technology initiated a new era, leading to more advanced furnaces capable of producing huge amounts of iron and resulting in the modern blast furnace.  Clinton Furnace played an important role in establishing Pittsburgh's dominance in iron and steel making.  Operations ended in 1927." – PA Historical and Museum Commission 2003

Abundant Fruit

Waning Trip

Got back from a great road trip Sunday night.  This was taken Saturday night just before we stopped for the evening.  The setting sun is fiery orange due to the massive wildfires in Canada.

There are other images from the trip I would rather be working on, but my computer is being very grumpy.  Sometimes it cooperates and sometimes it doesn't.  New pieces/parts are on the way.  I haven't even been able to do a "first pass" of all my trip images yet.  *sigh*

Fire Sale

A possible house listing ad.... Lovely two-story house with three story connected tower playroom for the kids.  Smoky accents throughout.

Taken with my iPhone.  Forgot the adapter for my camera.  May have to invest in one on the trip.

Structural Fog

Currently on a road trip.  It was pretty foggy between downtown Chicago and crossing over into Indiana here.  I love the geometry of the trestles against the foggy backdrop.
