New Do

Took mom to get a cut and perm today, so I thought I'd get a picture of the new hairdo. She's my curly-cue lady again. And when we pick out the curls, she's a nice fuzzy poofball.

Fence

I didn't have time for a photo shoot today. But I did take a documentary photo of part of our new fence. Isn't it lovely? Ok, so it doesn't look like a fence yet. But it was a lot of hard work getting it this far, so I thought I'd at least take a picture of it.

Pins and Needles

It was still raining today, so I thought I'd wrap up the week with more close-up photography.

See you next week!

Techie Corner
I decided to try my big lens this time and it went much smoother than yesterday. Used a +4 close-up filter. Post-production in Photoshop and Lightroom.

Chicklets for Adult Girls

It's raining cats and dogs today, so I had plenty of time for photography practice. I decided to work on a little product photography, which can really frustrate me at times. Several hours and 62 images later, I finally finshed for the day.

Techie Corner
I used my +4 close up filter. I couldn't get the gems lit the way I wanted, no matter how hard I tried. I did tons of post-production in Photoshop and Lightroom.

A Little Squirrelly

I'm trying to get a lot of spring cleanup done this week, but I'm finding it can be difficult to work in my blog/photography during all this. I see the squirrels have found the feeder again, so I decided this would be my photo shoot for the day. I don't try to keep the feeder from them, because that is a losing battle. I just wish they wouldn't knock the food everywhere.

See all the dark wet marks on the roof? Before the serene image you see above, there were two squirrels with wet little paws duking it out for the food. I took this image (below) through the window, and by the time I opened the door to get a better view, the victor was serenely munching on the spoils.

I used my big lens for these feeder shots.

Chippy

I was trying to get yard work done today, which seriously cut into my photography time. I did notice this little bird at our feeder as I was about to go into the house. It didn't seem too concerned with me, so I got my camera and went back outside to snap a few pictures. My bird book tells me it is a Chipping Sparrow, commonly called Chippy. (I'm not making this up, it's in the book.)

Techie corner
Used "shade" mode on my camera as it was pretty overcast at the time. Not much post-production.

Creature From The Deep

Well, creature from my fish tank, at least. I toyed with the idea of actually cleaning the fish tank this afternoon, but I got side-tracked into photography instead. (Funny how that happens!) This is Moby, and he usually doesn't like his picture taken either. I was rather surprised that he sat still long enough for me to get a few shots.

See you next week!

Used my +2 close-up lens on this one. Did a fair amount of post-production.

Kittytude

My kitty wasn't happy with me taking pictures of her tonight. She was definitely giving me some "kittytude." She finally curled up and closed her eyes. Enough is enough.

Tinkle the Ivories

Ok, so they're not ivory anymore, but they can still make beautiful music. Since the weather was so beautiful today, I spent most of my free time doing yard work. Exciting, I know. So I had to settle for an indoor shoot.

Just the usual stuff for post-production.

Windmills

I think windmills are neat looking. We have journeyed down to the MN/IA border many times to photograph them. It was a peaceful day last October when I took this photo. Standing on a back road in northern Iowa, all I could hear was the swoosh swoosh of the windmill blades.

Techie Corner
I wasn't able to get in a photo shoot today, so I decided to dig into the archives for an image.

Bonnie

I was really in the mood to do portraits today, but finding a willing subject is always a trick. So, for lack of a human subject, meet Bonnie, my mom's childhood doll. She spent a lot of years in my mom's attic, braving the elements as best she could. Bonnie's backdrop is a patchwork quilt that my grandmother made.

Just used window light in this image. Made a few minor post-production adjustments, including vignetting and softening.

Middle of the Night Madness

Most people are asleep at 2:30am. I, on the other hand, am out on the front steps taking pictures of YET ANOTHER snowfall. I could have waited until Friday afternoon, but everything looks different during the day and the street will be plowed by then. At least it was peaceful and quiet now.

Have a great weekend and hopefully this snow business will be over soon. I want spring!

It's late, or early, depending on how you look at it. Here's the short version:

Schmidt Brewery

I went on a little excursion today and wound up near this old brewery a few miles from our house. Years ago, I used to get free spring water from this brewery and one on the East Side of St. Paul. That was some good stuff! Now they are both defunct.

Techie Corner
I went with a very stylized look on this image. I'll list camera settings, but there was so much post-production work that the original settings are moot. It looked like they were in the process of cutting down the trees in the foreground. I may have to revisit this spot sometime.

Nostalgia

Most of the antiques I own sat around in my mom's basement and attic, out of the public eye. I like to have them on display instead of hidden away. And on a dark, gloomy day, they are something to photograph.

I doubt young people even know what liquid bluing is anymore. This bottle has been around as long as I can remember. Liquid bluing had several uses. It's primary marketing was for laundry to make dingy, yellowing whites bright white again. But have you ever heard the term "blue hair" used to refer to seniors? (No offense, seniors.) Well, liquid bluing was also supposed to turn yellowing hair bright white again. The bottle says you're supposed to add "a few drops to rinse water." Well, I guess most people didn't read that part, because there were a lot of ladies with blue hair! My grandma was a blue hair. I grew up thinking it was normal for grandmas to have blue hair. Now kids color their hair blue on purpose. Go figure, grandma would be a trend-setter now.

Techie Corner
I took this in dim light, so needed lots of post-production.

Hwy 60 Bridge at Sunset

We took a little drive on Saturday and made a stop near this bridge in Wabasha, MN around sunset.

Techie Corner
I was only able to get a few quick shots because it was a little riverfront road in front of some fancy houses. Just as I finished, a cop turned onto the road behind us. Time to move on!

Serenity Blue

Today I decided to go with an abstract close-up. It looks like it is under water, but it is really a glass egg knick-knack. I think the bubbles in the glass look really cool.

That's all for this week, see you on Monday!

Techie Corner
I used my +4 Close-up filter and my light box on this one. A little sharpening in Photoshop and a major crop in Lightroom.

Never a Dull Moment

How come as soon as we get some beautifully warm weather, the natives start getting restless? I wish I would have gotten the shot from a few minutes earlier when a school bus pulled up to let kids off. Nothing like coming home from school with the cops at your front door! Unfortunately, the kids who live in that building should be used to it by now.

Techie Corner
I know this is a blurry picture. I was being a spy today and hand-holding my big lens at the front door.

Bed Pan #382

We got a lot of snow yesterday, but it's warm enough that it is melting very quickly today. You may be scratching your head wondering why today's image is of a bed pan. I don't know. Maybe I'm going off the deep end with all this snow business. But I think an image of winter tinkling into a bed pan is rather appropriate.

On a side note, the sticker on the bed pan says it's No. 382. I wonder what the other 381 versions look like. Things that make you go "hmmmmm"....

Techie Corner
A little post production, but not a whole lot.
